Microsuction Ear Wax Removal in Singapore
The safest, most effective method – preferred by ENT specialists. Painless, 15 minutes, no water. Medisave claimable.
What is Microsuction?
Microsuction is the gold standard for ear wax removal in Singapore. Unlike traditional syringing or water irrigation, microsuction uses a gentle vacuum device under a high-powered microscope.
Your ENT specialist can see every part of your ear canal in real time. This ensures 100% safe and complete wax removal.
Because no water is used, there is zero risk of introducing moisture into the ear. This is a critical advantage in Singapore's humid climate where fungal infections are common.
The procedure takes only 10–15 minutes and provides instant hearing improvement.
Microsuction is recommended by the Singapore Ministry of Health as the preferred method for ear wax removal in clinical settings. It is also the only method used by major hospitals like SGH, Mount Elizabeth, and Tan Tock Seng for their ENT departments.

A Detailed Guide to Your Microsuction Visit
📋 Before Your Appointment
No special preparation is needed. Unlike water irrigation, microsuction does not require ear drops beforehand.
In fact, we prefer that you do NOT put any oil or drops in your ears for 24 hours before the procedure. Oil can create a paste that is harder to suction.
If you have a history of ear surgery, perforated eardrum, or diabetes, please inform our staff when booking. We will take extra precautions during the procedure.
🩺 During the Procedure
You will sit upright in our treatment chair. The specialist places a sterile speculum in your ear and positions the microscope.
You will see a bright light but feel nothing sharp. The suction device is gently inserted – you may hear a soft crackling or humming sound.
Most patients close their eyes and relax. The specialist will remove wax layer by layer, showing you progress on the screen if you wish.
The entire active suction takes 5–15 minutes per ear depending on the amount and hardness of wax. For extremely hard or dry wax (common in seniors), we may use a micro-curette alongside suction for precision.
🌟 Aftercare & Recovery
Immediately after, you will notice clearer hearing. Some patients experience mild sensitivity to loud sounds for an hour – this is normal as your eardrum adjusts.
There is no downtime. You can return to work or daily activities right away.
What to avoid: Do not insert anything into your ears. Avoid swimming for 5–7 days. Showering is fine after 48 hours – use the provided ear plugs.
If you experience pain, discharge, or bleeding (extremely rare), call us immediately.
We provide a written aftercare plan and a 7-day follow-up support via WhatsApp. You can also schedule a complimentary ear check after 2 weeks if you have recurring wax issues.
Why Microsuction is Superior for Singapore's Climate
🌧️ 84% Humidity & Fungal Risk
Singapore's high humidity creates an ideal environment for fungal ear infections (otomycosis).
Water irrigation leaves residual moisture deep in the ear canal. This can take days to dry, promoting fungal growth that leads to itching, discharge, and further blockage.
Microsuction uses absolutely no water. The dry vacuum removes wax and simultaneously suctions any moisture present.
Patients who switch from irrigation to microsuction report an 80% reduction in recurrent ear infections.
❄️ Air-Conditioning & Wax Hardening
Most Singaporeans spend 10+ hours daily in air-conditioned environments (office, home, MRT).
AC dries out the ear canal skin. The body responds by producing more wax as a defence mechanism. This wax becomes hard and impacted.
Microsuction is uniquely effective at removing this dry, tenacious wax without the need for softening drops that can irritate the skin.
👂 Asian Ear Anatomy
Clinical studies show that Asian populations have narrower and more curved ear canals compared to Caucasians.
This natural variation makes wax impaction more common. It also makes self-cleaning more difficult.
Microsuction's microscopic visualization allows our specialists to navigate these narrow canals safely. We can avoid skin abrasion – a common complication with cotton buds or blind irrigation.
At our clinic, we use paediatric-sized speculums for adult patients with very narrow canals. This ensures maximum comfort and safety.
Frequently Asked Questions (Microsuction)
The suction makes a soft humming or crackling sound, similar to a vacuum cleaner from a distance.
Most patients find it less startling than the sudden rush of water irrigation. You can ask for a demonstration before starting.
We generally prefer not to use drops because they can soften wax into a paste that is harder to suction.
If your wax is extremely hard, we may advise specific medical-grade drops 2–3 days prior. Do not use olive oil or over-the-counter drops without asking us first.
Yes. Most patients experience instant clarity.
If you have underlying hearing loss (not just wax), you may notice gradual improvement, but the blocked sensation will be gone immediately.
For most Singaporeans: every 6–8 months.
Swimmers and hearing aid users: every 4 months. Seniors with dry wax: every 6 months.
We will recommend a personalised schedule after your first visit.
Yes. No medications are used, and there is no radiation or anaesthesia.
Many pregnant patients prefer microsuction because it avoids water irrigation risks. However, inform our specialist if you are pregnant so we can adjust your seating position for comfort.
Our specialists are experienced with hard, impacted wax – common in seniors and those who have used cotton buds.
We use a combination of gentle micro-suction and micro-curettes (tiny loops) to break up and remove even the most stubborn wax.
In rare cases, we may prescribe medicated drops for 2-3 days before a second session (no extra charge).
