Pediatric Ear Wax Removal in Singapore
Gentle, child-friendly microsuction for ages 5 and above. No needles, no water, no tears. Medisave claimable.
Safe Ear Wax Removal for Children
Children's ear canals are narrower and more sensitive than adults. Using cotton buds or ear candles can cause serious injury.
Pediatric microsuction is the only method recommended by Singapore's ENT specialists for children. It uses a gentle vacuum under microscopic guidance – no water, no sharp instruments, no anaesthesia.
Our clinic specialises in treating young patients aged 5 to 16. We use smaller speculums designed for paediatric ear canals and take extra time to ensure your child feels comfortable and safe.
Most children describe the sensation as a "gentle tickle" or "soft wind" inside the ear. The procedure takes only 5–10 minutes.

Why Children in Singapore Have More Ear Wax Problems
🏊 Swimming & Water Activities
Many Singaporean children attend weekly swimming lessons. Pool chlorine and trapped moisture soften the outer wax but cause deeper impaction.
Repeated exposure leads to "swimmer's ear" – a painful infection that requires antibiotic drops. Microsuction removes the wax without adding moisture, preventing this cycle.
🎧 Screen Time & Earbuds
Children use earbuds for online classes, gaming, and videos. The earbuds push wax deeper into the ear canal with each use.
Over time, this creates hard, impacted wax that blocks up to 70% of the ear canal. Parents often mistake this for hearing loss or behavioral inattention.
❄️ Air-Conditioned Schools & Homes
Singapore's children spend most of their day in air-conditioned environments – classrooms, tuition centres, and at home.
Dry AC air causes the ear canal skin to flake. These skin flakes mix with wax, creating dry, hard plugs that do not migrate out naturally. This is why many children need professional cleaning every 6 months.
👂 Narrow Ear Canals (Asian Anatomy)
Asian children naturally have narrower and more curved ear canals compared to Caucasian children.
This anatomical difference means wax gets stuck more easily. Even a small amount of wax can cause significant hearing reduction in a child's small ear canal.
Signs Your Child May Need Ear Wax Removal
👂 Hearing & Behavioural Signs
- Turning up TV or device volume higher than usual
- Not responding when called from another room
- Asking "what?" or "huh?" frequently
- Poor concentration in school – mistaken for daydreaming
- Speaking louder than necessary
🩺 Physical Symptoms
- Complaining of earache or ear fullness
- Pulling or tugging at the ear
- Itchy ears, especially after swimming
- Visible yellow or brown wax at the ear opening
- Balance issues or dizziness (rare but possible)
⚠️ Important: If your child complains of sudden severe ear pain, has discharge with blood, or fever, see a doctor immediately. These are NOT typical wax symptoms.
What Happens During Your Child's Visit
Step 1: Calm Introduction (5 min)
Our specialist spends time talking to your child. We explain the procedure using child-friendly language – "we're going to vacuum the dust bunnies out of your ears."
We let your child see and hear the suction device on our hand first. There is no surprise or sudden noise.
Step 2: Gentle Examination (3 min)
Using a video otoscope, we show your child the wax on a screen. Most children find this fascinating. We identify the size and location of the blockage.
Step 3: Microsuction Procedure (5–10 min)
Your child sits on your lap or lies on the treatment bed. We use the smallest ear speculum available (paediatric size).
The suction sound is soft – like a gentle hum. We move slowly, taking breaks if your child feels nervous. Praise and small rewards (stickers) are given throughout.
Step 4: Aftercare & Reward
After removal, we show your child the "treasure" (the wax ball) and give a small toy or sticker. We provide written aftercare instructions for parents.
Hearing improvement is immediate. Most children say "I can hear better!" right away.
Parents Ask About Pediatric Ear Wax Removal
We treat children from age 5 upwards. At this age, children can understand simple instructions and sit still for a few minutes.
For younger children (under 5), we recommend assessment first; sometimes we use softening drops and refer to a paediatric ENT if needed.
No. Microsuction is painless. The most common sensation is a light tickling or soft breeze feeling inside the ear.
If wax is very hard, we may use a micro-curette – this feels like a gentle scratch but never sharp pain. We stop immediately if your child shows discomfort.
No swimming for 5–7 days. The ear canal retains protective wax for about a week after cleaning. Swimming too soon increases infection risk.
Showering is fine after 48 hours – we provide child-sized ear plugs.
For most Singaporean children: every 6–12 months.
Regular swimmers: every 4–6 months. Children who use earbuds daily: every 6 months. We will recommend a schedule after your first visit.
If your child has active otitis media (middle ear infection) or otitis externa (swimmer's ear), we will not perform microsuction until the infection clears.
We will refer you to a paediatrician for antibiotics first. Once infection resolves (usually 1–2 weeks), microsuction is safe.
Yes, immediately. In fact, children with hearing aids need more frequent cleaning because hearing aids block natural wax migration.
We recommend cleaning every 3–4 months for paediatric hearing aid users.
